The Touch Pool

Our Touch Pool recreates a gentle stretch of rocky intertidal shoreline, kept just twelve to eighteen inches deep so every visitor — including the smallest ones — can comfortably reach in. Bat rays glide past with their fins grazing your fingertips, ochre sea stars grip the rockwork with hundreds of tiny tube feet, and California sea cucumbers rest along the sandy bottom. Every animal here is chosen specifically for how well it tolerates gentle human contact, and our educators are always at the pool’s edge to show you the right way to touch — two fingers, gliding motion, never a squeeze.

Water in the pool is held around 58°F, matching the cool coastal water these animals actually live in, and it’s filtered continuously so it stays clear enough to see straight to the bottom. It’s usually the first stop on a visit, and for a lot of kids, it’s the moment marine biology stops being a book and starts being real.
